Biography :
He was born on April, 21, 1870 in Petersburg in family of architect N.L. Benois. From 1887 to 1888 he was the irregular student in the Academy of Arts (AH), he took lessons of painting from Brat Albert Nikolayevich, but mainly studied independently, he worked in painting, drawing, studied a history of arts, in 1897 has created the first large work - a series of water colors " Last walks of Louis XIV ". He participated in exhibitions since 1891, he was one of organizers and ideological heads of the association" World of Art ". Benois'es works were exhibited at Germany, Italy, France, etc. In 1914-1917 he worked on sketches of a panel and wall pictures of the Kazan railway station in Moscow. After revolution he actively participated in the organization of protection of monuments of culture. He was a member of the Commission on protection of monuments of art and olden time, he managed picture gallery of the Hermitage, wrote critiques and works on a history of arts. In 1918-1922 he has created a series of lithographs devoted to Petergof. In the picturesque and graphic works he preferred a historical genre, gave the special attention two themes: France of times of Louis XIV and to Petersburg of the XVIIIth - XIXth centuries. Benois was the remarkable illustrator. Among his works of an illustration to "the Copper horseman" of Pushkin above which he worked with 1903 on 1822 (the separate book has published in 1923), drawings in magazines "World of art", "Art treasures of Russia" (in 1901-1903 he was the editor of magazine). Since 1900 he worked as the theatrical artist. He made out performances of Hermitage Theatre of Petersburg, Mariynsky Theatre, MHT (???), Big Dramatic Theatre (BDT). But the greatest popularity to him was brought with work in Dyagilev's Russian seasons with whom he cooperated since 1908. In 1926 A.N. Benois has emigrated to France. He worked basically above mounting of performances of the Comédie-Française, Grand Opera, Royal Ballet in London, La Scala in Milan. Benois’es portraits are written by L.S. Bakst, K.A. Somov, K.С. Petrov-Vodkin, F.A. Malyavin, G.S. Vereysky, A.P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva. A.N. Benois has died on February, 9, 1960 in Paris.
